Sergeant Enrico Giangiulio was born in the Hayville section of Winslow Township, NJ, to Mr. and Mrs. Santo Giangiulio on March 27, 1917. Known to friends and family as “Chick,” he lived on Mays Landing Road in Hayville, and was well known in nearby Hammonton, NJ. Inducted into the Army in January 1941, he took part in the campaigns in North Africa and Sicily. While serving with the 9th Infantry Division, Sergeant Giangiulio was wounded in Normandy on July 20, 1944. He died of his wounds on July 28, 1944, at the age of 27.

Enrico Giangiulio was brought home to New Jersey in the spring of 1948. On May 29, 1948, all businesses in Hammonton closed from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM in tribute to Sergeant Giangiulio. After a solemn requiem mass was celebrated that morning at St. Joseph’s Church in Hammonton, he was buried with full military honors that day at Oak Grove Cemetery, on the White Horse Pike. Sergeant Giangiulio was survived by his father, Santo Giangiulio; brothers Nicholas, Norman, and Anthony; and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Pistone, of Hammonton, and Miss Helen Giangiulio, of Hayville.
