Private Emmett W. Ross Jr. was born in 1918 at 840 Linden Street in Camden, NJ, the son of Emmett W. and Mary E. Ross. He graduated from Camden High School in 1936, earning a four-year scholarship to New York University, from which he graduated in 1940. He went on to Harvard Law School, graduating in 1943. He was working as a law clerk in the office of former Camden Judge Frank F. Neutze and studying for the New Jersey Bar examination when he was drafted in January of 1944. He was sent overseas in February of 1945.
Private Ross was a radio operator serving with Troop B, 121st Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, 106th Cavalry Group. He was killed in action on April 13, 1945, in Germany, 28 days after he went into combat. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
Emmett Ross was brought home in the summer of 1948. He was buried on August 9, 1948, at Arlington Cemetery in Pennsauken, NJ, next to his father, who had also passed in 1945. He was survived by his mother, Mary E. Ross, and a brother, Technician 5th Class Charles Ross.

Services Set Friday For Private Ross

Services for Pvt. Emmett W. Ross Jr., will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in Murray’s funeral home, 408 Cooper street, where friends may call Thursday night. Burial will be in Arlington cemetery.
He was killed in action in Benheim, Germany, April 13, 1944, at the age of 27. He was a radio operator with the motorized cavalry of the Seventh army, and was killed 28 days after he went into combat.
Private Ross entered the army in January, 1944, and went overseas in February, 1944. He was a graduate of Camden High school and was employed as a law clerk in the office of former Judge Frank F. Neutze before he went into the army.
At Camden High school he won a four year scholarship from New York university, from which he was graduated in 1940. He was a graduate of the Harvard Law School in 1943. He was a native of Camden.
Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Mary E., of 840 Linden street; a brother, Charles E., Camden; and a grandmother, Mrs. Nellie G. Ross, of California.
