Staff Sergeant Elwood C. Shone was born in New Jersey in 1922 to William and Mary Shone. He was their youngest child; there were four children still at home in April 1930 when the census was taken. The Shone family then lived at 603 Jackson Street in Camden NJ, where William Shone worked as a laborer at the McAndrews & Forbes licorice factory. Elwood Shone attended one year of high school before leaving to go to work. By 1943 Elwood Shone had married, and made his home with wife Margaret at 1713 Fillmore Street. His older brother Jacob was living next door at 1711 Fillmore Street.

Elwood Shone was inducted into the United States Army on November 28, 1942 at Camden NJ. He was wounded during the Roer River crossing on February 23, 1945 while serving with the 3rd Platoon, Company B, 405th Infantry Regiment, 102nd Infantry Division. He was awarded the Purple Heart while recovering at the 125th General Hospital on March 17, 1945. Sergeant Shone was considered healthy enough to return to the United States aboard the Army hospital ship USS Dogwood in April of 1945. Sadly, illness overtook him. Staff Sergeant Elwood C. Shone passed away in Charleston County, South Carolina on May 3, 1945. His death is attributed to acute yellow atrophy of the liver.

On August 14, 1945 Sergeant Shone was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star at Camden City Hall. The medal was awarded to his wife Margaret.
