Private First Class Elwood A. Whiteley was born in 1912 to James A. and Pauline Spring Whiteley. The Whiteleys lived in the home of Pauline’s parents, Frederick and Carrie Spring. At the time of the 1920 census, James Whiteley was working at a shipyard in the Camden area, most likely New York Shipbuilding Corporation, a short walk from the home at 2322 South 7th Street.
Elwood Whiteley followed his father and was an employee of the New York Shipbuilding Company in Camden. He was a member of the 14th Ward Democratic Club at 2461 South 7th Street, and had served as that organization’s sergeant of arms. Elwood Whiteley was still living at 2322 South 7th Street, in the Fairview section of Camden, with his mother, Mrs. Pauline Whiteley, before being inducted into the Army in February of 1944. He had been awarded the marksman badge while in training, and was sent overseas in July of 1944.
Private First Class Whiteley was killed in action on November 8, 1944, during the Battle of the Huertgen Forest.
Elwood Whiteley was brought home to Camden after the war. He was buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Camden, NJ, on December 8, 1947.

Services will be held for Pvt. Elwood A. Whiteley at 10.30 a. m. Saturday in the home of his mother, Mrs. Pauline S. Whiteley, 2309 South Seventh street. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. Private Whiteley was killed in Germany on Nov. 8, 1944, at the age of 32. He had entered the army that February, previously having been employed at New York Shipbuilding Corp. He was a sergeant-at-arms of the Fourteenth Ward Democratic club. His army service was with Co. B., 112th Infantry, 28th Division.
WHITELEY — On November 8, 1944, at Germany, Pfc. Elwood, of Co. B., 112th Infantry, 28th Division, beloved son of Pauline S. (née Spreng) and the late James A. Whiteley, age 32 years. Relatives and friends of the family, also employees of the New York Shipbuilding Corp., are invited to attend the funeral services on Saturday at 10.30 o’clock at his late residence, 2309 S. 7th St., Camden, N. J. Interment at Evergreen Cemetery. Friends may call Friday evening. Funeral under direction of Harry Leonard.
