Private Ellwood K. Young was the son of William H. and Azza Key Young, of 21 West Stiles Avenue, Collingswood, NJ. His father worked for a wire manufacturing company in Camden, NJ.

Private Young died from pneumonia on December 2, 1918, just two days after being pronounced cured from wounds received during an accident in the Argonne Forest. He was a motorcycle runner, and in rising from a shell hole during an attack his belt became fastened in something and was torn from his waist. When the pistol in the holster fastened to the belt fell, the weapon exploded and he was wounded. He recovered only to contract pneumonia and died on December 2, 1918. Young was 20 years old and had enlisted July 21, 1917, in the 3rd Regiment, New Jersey National Guard, four days before its departure for Camp Edge, Sea Girt, NJ. He went to Camp McClellan, Alabama with the regiment and was transferred to the 111th Machine Gun Battalion.

Ellwood Young was survived by his parents, brothers George, William H. Jr., and Harry, and sister Abby Young, all of the West Stiles Avenue address as of the 1920 Census. The Young family was still on West Stiles Avenue as late as April 1930.
