Sergeant Edwin F. Allen, Jr., was born on November 9, 1922. His father had been a star basketball player in the 1920s with local teams, and later refereed and coached girls’ teams; his mother was also athletically inclined. He was a Physical Education major at the Teachers College of Temple University in Philadelphia when he enlisted into the Army in October 1942.
Edwin Allen was assigned to active duty at Camp Swift, Texas, in February of 1943. As a result of his educational background, he qualified for the Advanced Specialized Training Program (ASTP), and was sent to Lake Forest College, Illinois, in April of 1943 to study engineering. He remained there until the ASTP program was ended due to the Army’s need for infantry personnel. In July of 1944 he reported to Camp White, Oregon, and was sent overseas on July 29th.
Sergeant Edwin F. Allen Jr., of 178 Princeton Road, Audubon, New Jersey, was killed in action on October 26th, 1944, in the Philippines, where he had led a rifle squad during the Battle for Tatnauan, on Leyte. After the war his body was returned to the United States, and he was buried at Beverly National Cemetery in Beverly, New Jersey, on September 1, 1948.

Burial services will be conducted at Beverly National cemetery, Beverly, N.J., at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow for Sgt. Edwin N. Allen who was killed in action in the Pacific theatre in 1944.
Sergeant Allen, who was 24 at the time of his death, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin N. Allen, of 117 West Pine street. He was killed when General MacArthur’s forces were pushing into the Philippines in October, 1944. He commanded a rifle squad in the ninety-sixth infantry division.
He enlisted in the army in October, 1942, joining directly from Temple University where he was studying physical education. He was called to active duty in February, 1943, and was sent to Lake Forest College, Ill., as an engineering student in the army service technical program.
Sergeant Allen’s father is a former basketball star of 25 years ago, and he later coached basketball teams around Camden. Mrs. Allen, the former Nettie Small, is the musician for the Camden county chapter of the Gold Star Mothers.
Mr. and Mrs. Allen were notified three weeks ago that their son’s body would be brought home.
The burial services tomorrow will be conducted by army personnel from Ft. Dix.
