Private Edward M. McGowan was born on November 29, 1893, to John J. and Mary J. McGowan. He was also recorded as being named Edwin McGowan. Along with another son, Joseph, the McGowan family lived at 49 Marlton Avenue in Camden, NJ. The elder McGowan worked as a clerk in a grocery store, then as a huckster, and he would go on to owning his own grocery later in life. Edward McGowan married shortly after registering for the draft in June of 1917. He and his wife Emily E. McGowan lived with his parents at the Marlton Avenue address. In December of 1918, a son, Edward M. Jr., was born.

Private Edward McGowan was training with School Company 122 at the Machine Gun School at Camp Hancock, Augusta, GA, when he died of pneumonia on January 15, 1919. His body was returned to New Jersey and he was buried in Camden. His parents were still living on Marlton Avenue as late as April of 1930.
