EDWARD LAWRENCE. PATTERSON died alone in Cherry Hill on March 5, 2006, 12 days after his 77th birthday. A bachelor, he had outlived his immediate family, and had lost contact with the family of his deceased brother. With no will and one to claim his body, he would have been buried in an unmarked grave at the Camden County potter’s field at Lakeland, in Gloucester Township, if not for the intercession of Merchantville funeral director Jeff Brown. A veteran and member of the American Legion, Mr. Brown discovered that Edward Patterson was an Army veteran, and arranged to have him buried with full honors at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown NJ.
Edward Lawrence Patterson was born in Philadelphia on February 21, 1929 to William Patterson and his wife, the former Annie Mary Conley. He lived in the city through at least 1995, from 1969 until then at 52 North 33rd Street. I probably passed him in the street or at Cartun Hardware on Federal Street dozens of times. In any event, Jeff Brown and I both felt that Mr. Patterson, in a way representing a very large number of men who led ordinary lives, but, with no family to remember them, disappear into the mists of time, deserved a better deal. Mr. Brown turned what papers and photographs that were found in Mr. Patterson’s possession at the time of his death. I spent a few days scanning them and trying to put them into some sort of cohesive order, and also spent time researching his family history. What you will find on this page is his story and that if his family, as best as I could piece it together.

Anna Mary Patterson and a younger woman. Both appear pregnant to me, the younger woman quite so.
David J. Patterson is Born
A bank book for an account opened in 1946 shows the name Anna Mary Patterson. The only logical explanation that I can deduce from the presence of the papers and pictures in Edward Patterson’s effect is that David was his younger brother, quite possibly a half-brother, as William Patterson’s name does not show on the document below with the baby’s thumb- and footprint.

Many thanks for the candy. I don't hear from you often but when I do. . . . Sorry I haven't seen you for so long. I just get tired of traveling. I'm glad you're holding your job. It's not good to change too often. Hope all of you are keeping well. I haven't heard a word from Jim Connor for ages. Haven't heard from the Sisters since August. I'm beginning to wonder if I'll hear any more. Camden is fading out I guess. You and the Waters don't forget. Ed, I hope you get a box of candy to the Waters occasionally. They pay you for it, don't they? Let me know. I'm enclosing something for the candy you've sent. If ever you send any more—address it to me here. They will let me know and I'll direct what to do with it.
How about a letter from you sometime? Have you forgotten how to write. I've just met a swell boy here in Catonsville—a boy of fifteen—who wishes to be a Dominican. He and I are great friends. A wonderful boy and a Catholic only two years.

Well Mother here I am again trying to write. I just want to let you know I'm doing fine. My ankle is pretty well healed, I ought to be out of the hospital in a day or so. It certainly feels good to be able to stand on my foot again, by the way how is your foot? are you taking care of it.
I haven't received any answer to my letters, they might be holding up my mail at the Company.
It won't be long before Christmas, Everywhere I go I hear Christmas carols, I hope I will be able to come home. Say a few prayers & that ought to fix it. Well I'm going to hit the bed now. It's almost time for the lights to go out. Tell Marge & Dave to take it easy. May God Bless You

The Battle of the Sexes
Slowly at first, but with ever increasing speed, the female movement has taken over; and the male has been relegated to a mere vestige of his former self. He is a man in name only! This isn't entirely the fault of the female; but of the male as well, who has allowed this unfortunate and tragic catastrophe to happen by giving in to these women, and allowing them to subjugate us.
Women want to compete with men on an equal footing. O.K., granted! But at the same time, they want all the courtesy and deference due them as women. This is an unfortunate situation. How can a woman dig a ditch and take care of her duties as a housewife? The man is traditionally the breadwinner. He's supposed to go out, earn a living and bring home the bacon, and the woman is supposed to cook it.
Being a member of the downtrodden and subservient male sex, I say bring back the good old days when a woman's place was in the home, cooking, washing and ironing, and caring for the children.
Women want to invade man's domain and at the same time drag their petticoats with them. It's time the male emancipated himself and threw off the shackles. This can only be accomplished [pencil addition at foot]
