Private Edward Beckley was born October 27, 1893, to William S. and Louise “Lillie” M. Beckley. His father worked as a brakeman on freight trains. He had lived at 314 Mechanic Street in Camden, NJ. At the time he registered for the draft, he was working in Atlantic City, NJ for the Shill Rolling Chair Company, fixing the rolling chairs, a popular boardwalk attraction in those times.

He registered for the draft in Atlantic City, New Jersey on June 5, 1917. Called up in November 1917, Private Beckley was sent to Camp Dix. Assigned to the 64th Transportation Corps Regiment, he died of pulmonary tuberculosis in France on November 30, 1918. The book Camden County in the Great War records his name as “Edwin Beckley.” His parents moved to 1030 South 4th Street shortly after the war.
