Private Edward B. May, of 428 Pearl Street, Camden, NJ, enlisted into the United States Army on June 15, 1918 at the age of 18. He was sent to Fort Slocum, NY, and was assigned to the Insurance Department, Quartermaster Corps. He was later transferred to the Medical Corps, serving at Debarkation Hospital No. 1, on Ellis Island in New York Harbor.
While home on a furlough for the Christmas holidays, Private May contracted scarlet fever and died on December 29, 1918. He was survived by his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Woltjin. He had been a member of the First Presbyterian Church which stood at 501 Penn Street.
