Biography
Private First Class Charles Ralph Sapio of Haddonfield, New Jersey.
Private First Class Charles Ralph Sapio was born on August 18, 1923, in Haddonfield, New Jersey, the son of John and Florence Sapio of 10 Watkins Avenue, Haddonfield. He graduated from Haddonfield High School in 1943, where he was president of the student body in his senior year. He was captain of the 1942 football team, playing in 1940, 1941, and 1942, and was named all-state and all-South Jersey tackle. He was also a member of the field team, hurling the javelin and discus.
Entering the Army on July 23, 1943, Private Sapio trained at Fort Dix and Camp Barclay, Texas. After being stationed at the 76th General Hospital in Vancouver, Washington, he was sent to England in February 1944. He participated in the invasion of France and continued in the fighting through to the Belgium campaign. He was killed in Belgium on January 8, 1945, at the age of 20. He is buried at Berlin Cemetery in Berlin, New Jersey.
His father, John Sapio, was the proprietor of Johnnie’s Inn at 400 Haddon Avenue, Westmont. His uncle, Salvatore Sapio, a Staff Sergeant, was killed on January 26, 1944, at Anzio, Italy.

Solemn requiem Mass will be celebrated in Christ the King R. C. Church, Haddonfield, Monday at 10 a. m. for Pfc. Charles R. Sapio, 400 Haddon avenue, Westmont, who was killed in Belgium Jan. 8, 1945, at the age of 20.
Relatives and friends will meet in the funeral home at 9 White Horse pike, Haddon Heights, at 8:30 a. m., where friends may call Sunday night.
Private Sapio was the only child of John and Florence Sapio. The father is the proprietor of Johnny’s Inn at the Westmont address.
