Biography

Corporal Charles Lesley Mills was born October 19, 1920. He lived at 1832 South 6th Street in Camden’s 8th Ward. He had attended Burrough Junior High School at Haddon & Newton Avenues in Camden. Charles Mills worked for the New York Shipbuilding Corporation prior to his enlistment into the Marine Corps on August 24, 1942, in Philadelphia, PA. He underwent basic training at Parris Island, SC.

Corporal Mills was wounded during the battle for Saipan on June 22, 1944, and was treated at Navy Hospital #10 in the Pacific. He returned to his unit and was killed in action on June 19, 1945, on Okinawa. He was survived by his mother, Mrs. Pearl R. Mills, and brothers Carleton and Ralph Mills.

Charles Mills was brought home to New Jersey in the winter of 1949. He was buried at Harleigh Cemetery on March 5, 1949.

Services for Cpl. Charles L. Mills will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. in the residence, 232 Cumberland street, Gloucester, where friends may call tonight. Burial will be in Harleigh cemetery, under direction of Frank J. Leonard.

Corporal Mills, who was born in Camden, was killed in action, June 19, 1945, on Okinawa, at the age of 25, while serving with the Second Marine Division, Eighth Marines.

He enlisted in the Marine Corps Aug. 24, 1942, in Philadelphia, and went overseas in July, 1943. He was awarded the Purple Heart in June, 1944. Corporal Mills attended the Burrough Junior High school and had worked at the New York Ship Yard.

Surviving is his mother, Mrs. Pearl Mills, of the Gloucester address; and two brothers, Carleton and Ralph, both of Gloucester.
