Second Lieutenant Charles H. Sutman was born February 16, 1913. He grew up at 1468 South 4th Street in Camden, NJ, near the corner of South 4th and Whitman Street. His neighbor in the corner house at 1474 South 4th Street was Lewis Riondino; both men would serve in the United States Army during the war years, neither would return. Charles Sutman graduated from Camden High School in 1929.

By 1930, Mr. and Mrs. Sutman had divorced, and in that year his mother Edna, a bookkeeper, owned the home on South 4th Street. Charles Sutman had parlayed his skill at shorthand into a job as a stenographer in an office; older brother Linwood was a wood worker in a furniture factory, and younger brother William worked in a florist’s shop. Charles Sutman had progressed to become an underwriter for the Security Mutual Life Insurance Company prior to his entrance into the United States Army in 1942.

Lieutenant Charles Sutman died of wounds received in action on July 15, 1944. His death was reported in the August 17, 1944 edition of the Camden Courier-Post. After the war his body was returned home, and he was buried at Beverly National Cemetery in Beverly, NJ.
