Private Charles A. Barnes III was born on April 26, 1926, in New Jersey, to Charles A. and Virginia Barnes. His father had served in the United States Navy during World War I. The family, which included younger siblings Kenneth and Barbara, lived in Sarasota, Florida before returning to New Jersey and settling in Merchantville at 112 Locust Street. Charles A. Barnes III attended public schools in Merchantville and worked for a Philadelphia funeral director before entering the Marines on May 18, 1944. He is reported to have resided at 12 Clifton Avenue in Merchantville NJ before going off to service.

Private Charles A. Barnes trained at Parris Island, qualified for signal training, and was then sent to Company E, Signal Battalion, Special Training Regiment at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. In October of 1944 he went AWOL and received 30 days confinement. Private Barnes was sent to San Francisco in January of 1945 to go overseas as a replacement. He was wounded on February 27, 1945, and returned to action on March 3rd. He was killed in action on March 15, 1945. In 1948 he was brought home and buried at Beverly National Cemetery in Beverly, New Jersey. Charles A. Barnes III was survived by his parents, brother Kenneth, and sister Barbara.
