Introduction
Private Carl G. Thorman was born in New Jersey in 1924. His father had passed away by 1930, and his family was living in National Park, N.J. on Asbury Avenue at the time of the 1930 census. Mrs. Thorman later moved her family to 521 Bowers Avenue in Runnemede, N.J. He had been a member of the Mount Ephraim (N.J.) Junior Fife and Drum Corps. While a student at Audubon (N.J.) High School, he enlisted in the Merchant Marine after Pearl Harbor was attacked on December 7, 1941, as he was too young at the time for military service. He served 11 months on merchant shipping, including trips on the Murmansk run. He was inducted into the Army in January 1943 from Philadelphia, PA. After training at Camp Wheeler, GA, he was assigned to the 350th Infantry Regiment, 88th Infantry Division, and saw combat in Italy. He was killed in action in Italy on July 15, 1944. He was 19 at the time of his death.
Carl Thorman's death was reported in the August 16, 1944 edition of the Camden Courier-Post.
He was survived by his mother, who had remarried, Mrs. Alice Stender, a half-brother, William Boothroyd, then serving in an artillery unit in the South Pacific, and half-sister Beryl Boothroyd.
