Man left suburbs to work with kids
By ALAN GUENTHER Although almost 10,000 people moved out of Camden in the last decade, Tom Wilson, 45, moved back in. "I originally moved to Camden to work with Urban Promise Ministries," he said. Now he works with Life Assembly of God Church, where he counsels children, provides them with food and helps them with their homework. "I think that God burdened my heart for children at risk. For a lot of different reasons, the kids in Camden are victims. Maybe their parents can help them, maybe they can't," he said. Wilson joined the community walk in the Cooper Plaza neighborhood Friday night. He intends to stay in the city and wants to be part of an effort to make it safe. "I just got really sick of the privilege and the power and everything in the suburbs," he said. "It's God. Of myself, I don't care. But God made me care. I don't know how else to really explain it, so I'm just doing what I can." |
