Shroff was elected mayor in a close election in 1856 as a Democrat, carrying the city by a margin of only 22 votes. He did not run for re-election. James Shroff subsequently worked at the iron works conducted by John Farson Starr and Jesse W. Starr, where he had charge of the moulding loft. He was killed on September 3, 1869 when he fell from a scaffold, as reported in the September 6, 1869 edition of the Philadelphia Inquirer. |
