Introduction
Alice B. Hanford was born in New Jersey around 1856. She married businessman H.B. Hanford around 1887 and moved to Camden with her husband shortly thereafter. The Hanfords lived at 517 Penn Street, and at some point in the 1890s bought the mansion of prominent Camden attorney Howard M. Cooper at 633 Cooper Street, where they lived until Mr. Hanford passed away in the 1920s. Mrs. Hanford remained there until the early 1920s when she sold the property to the Community Hotel Corporation. The home was razed, and the Hotel Walt Whitman was erected in its place. Mrs. Hanford subsequently moved to Haddonfield NJ.
Alice B. Hanford was quite active in the Camden Day Nursery, serving as that organization’s president in the late 1920s.

Mrs. H.B. Hanford is Re-elected President of Day Nursery Board

Mrs. H.B. Hanford was re-elected president of the Camden Day Nursery board at a meeting in the nursery, 327 Stevens Street, yesterday afternoon.
Others elected as a result of the annual ballot cast are Mrs. H.G. Morton, Mrs. W.H. Brooks, and Mrs. James Draper. Vice president; Miss Emma McNichols, recording secretary; Mrs. Warren Thompson, corresponding secretary; and Miss Margaret Wrifford, treasurer.
Plans for the nursery for the coming year were discussed.
