STAFF SERGEANT SPENCER BALDWIN FOX of 2 Chestnut Place, Westmont NJ was killed in action over Kiskoros, Hungary on April 12, 1944, on his 13th mission over enemy territory when the B-24 bomber he was in, serial number 42-64485, nicknamed "Mickey Finn", was shot down by German fighters. Eight men were able to bail out of the plane, Staff Sergeant Fox, Second Lieutenat James Ormsbee, the pilot, and Second Lieutenant Kenneth Speaker, bomardier, went down with the plane. Staff Sergeant Fox served as both a nose gunner and as a radio operator during his time overseas. He had been awarded the Air medal with Oak Leaf Cluster prior to his death. Spencer Fox was a 1940 graduate of Collingswood (NJ) High School. He stated for his yearbook that his hobbies were stamp collecting and reading, and that he was undecided as to his future plans. He had worked at the New York Shipbuilding Company in Camden NJ prior to enlisting in the Army in November of 1942. he received training as a radio operator at Scott Field in Illinois. The remains of Spencer Fox, James Ormsbee, and Kenneth Speaker were recovered after war's end. They were returned to the United States and were buried together at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri. Spencer B. Fox was survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Maurice B. Fox, of the Westmont address, and a sister, Mrs. Lorayne Pims. |
