SERGEANT EDWIN F. ALLEN, JR., was born on November 9, 1922. The elder Allen had been a star basketball player in the 1920s with local teams, and later refereed and coached girls teams, and his mother was also athletically inclined. He was a Physical Education major at the Teachers College of temple University in Philadelphia PA when he enlisted into the Army in October 1942. Edwin Allen was assigned to active duty at Camp Swift TX in February of 1943. As a result of his educational background, he qualified for the Advanced Specialized Training Program (ASTP), and was sent to Wake Forest College in April of 1943 to study engineering. He remained there until the ASTP program was ended, due to the needs of the Army for infantry personnel. In July of 1944 he reported to Camp White OR, and was sent overseas on July 29th. Sergeant Edwin F. Allen Jr., of 178 Princeton Road, Audubon NJ was killed in action on October 26th, 1944 in the Philippines, where he had led a rifle squad, during the Battle for Tatnauan, on Leyte. After the war his body was returned to the United States, and he was buried at Beverly National Cemetery in Beverly NJ on September 1, 1948. |
