PRIVATE MELVIN L. LOGAN
was born around 1924, the third son of Joseph and Laura Logan, coming
after Thomas and Joseph Jr. At the time of the 1930 Census The Logan
family lived in the Borough of Tavistock, where Joseph Logan was the
green keeper for the golf course that was (and is) there. Melvin Logan's
uncle, Robert Logan, also lived with the family, and was employed by the
Tavistock Country Club as a gardener.
The
Logan family later moved out of the house they had occupied at Tavistock,
but remained in neighboring Haddonfield, at 448 East Kings Highway. This
may have been due to the death of Joseph Logan Sr., as the 1947 Polk's
directory reports Laura Logan as a widow. Melvin Logan was drafted late
in the war, and was assigned to the 291st Infantry regiment, 75th
Infantry Division.
Private
Melvin Logan was killed in action after the 75th Infantry Division had
crossed the Dortmund-Ems Canal on the April 4th, in fighting to clear
the approaches to Dortmund, Germany, on April 6, 1945. He was survived
by his mother, Uncle Robert, and other relations.
