TECHNICAL
SERGEANT BERTINE was born in Pennsylvania in 1917 to Bertine M. and
Tessie Riegel. He was the third of four children, coming after Ernest
and Jane, and before younger sister Peggy. In 1920 the family lived on
Hamilton street in Allentown PA, where the elder Riegel worked as a
cigar store salesman. By 1930 the family had moved to 289 Lake Street in
Haddonfield NJ, and Bertine Riegel Sr. was working as an insurance
agent. Bertine Riegel Jr. was a star football player while attending
Haddonfield Memorial High School. After his high school days were over
he was employed as a sales man for the Campbell Soup Company in Camden
NJ. A member of the United States Army reserves, he was called to active
duty when the National Guard was mobilized.
After
Bertine Riegel had gone on active duty, he qualified for flight duty. He
was trained as a radio operator. In November of 1942, it was reported in
the Camden Courier-Post that he had been promoted to Corporal, and was
serving with the 65th Observation Group somewhere on the Atlantic
Coast". He later became a member of a bomber crew.
Technical Sergeant Riegel died to causes not related to battle on May
16,
1944. He was brought home to the United States, and buried at Arlington
National Cemetery in Arlington VA on May 10, 1948.
Surviving
Bertine Riegel were his parents, of 131 Hopkins Avenue in Haddonfield
NJ, brother Ernest I. Riegel of Collingswood NJ, and sisters Mrs. Peggy
Miller of Audubon NJ and Mrs. Jane Wright of Columbus GA.
