PRIVATE JOSEPH HARRISON of
340 Mercer Street, Gloucester City NJ, was reported killed in action
while serving in France, on January 29, 1945. The headstone depicted in
the photograph above may well be in error. The son of Mrs. Catherine
Harrison, he had attended Mt. Holly (NJ) High School before entering the
New Jersey National Guard, and was called to active duty when the nation
mobilized. He had received the Soldiers Medal for heroism when, as a
guard at an ammunition dump which caught fire, he drove a truck from the
blaze, saving the lives of several comrades. Besides his mother, a
brother, Francis Harrison, also then in the Army, survived him.
