SHIPFITTER SECOND
CLASS JOSEPH A. BARRON was born on September 29, 1919 to Harry and Marie
Barron in Pennsylvania. The Barron's moved to New Jersey in the early
1920s, and in 1930 the family lived at 413 Haakon Road, Brooklawn NJ.
His father was working as a railroad clerk. The Barrons later moved to 900 Hudson
Street, Gloucester City NJ. A well-known local baseball player, he
played second base and led off for the Gloucester High School baseball
team. He later
played for the Audubon and Brooklawn teams of the Camden County Baseball
League. Playing for Audubon in 1942, Joseph
Barron hit .377, eighth best mark in the league.
Joseph Barron worked at the New York
Shipbuilding Company prior to
entering the Navy on his birthday in 1942. He was killed in action when the aircraft
carrier USS Franklin was hit by a kamikaze on March 19, 1945.
Joseph Barron was preceded in death by
his father, Harry Barron, who
passed away February 13, 1945 at home from heart trouble. He was
survived by his mother, Mrs. Marie Barron, and seven siblings, Mrs. Marie Miller of
Camden,
Mrs. Catherine Mitchell of Pennsauken, Mrs. Helen Devine of Gloucester,
Miss Sarah Barron of Gloucester, Edward Barron of Camden, William Barron
who was a Sergeant in the Army, and Henry Barron, of Gloucester, an uncle, Robert
Barron of Philadelphia, and an aunt, Mrs. Sarah Kline, of Lutz FL.
