PRIVATE FIRST CLASS
FRANCIS NEWCOME, 23, of 337 Mercer Street, Gloucester City NJ was killed
in action while serving with the United States Army at Linnich, Germany on
February 23, 1945, during the 102nd Infantry Division's crossing of the
Rhine River.
Francis Newcome was born
in 1922 to James and Anna Newcome. His father passed away in 1934 at the
age of 58. Francis Newcome worked for the Rogers Transportation Company
prior to entering the Army in December 1942. A member of Headquarters
Company,
3rd Battalion,
407th Infantry Regiment,
102nd Infantry Division, PFC Newcome was sent to Europe
in September of 1944.
The death of Francis
Newcome was reported in the Camden Courier-Post April 3, 1945 edition.
He was survived by his mother Anna, two brothers serving in the Army,
Private First Class Joseph and Private John Newcome, and three sisters,
Miss Margaret Newcome, Mrs. Catherine McNutt of Gloucester City, and
Mrs. Anna Bridgeman of Mount Ephraim.
Francis Newcome was
brought home in November of 1948. He was buried at New St. Mary's
Cemetery in Bellmawr NJ on December 4, 1948.
