CORPORAL STANLEY F.
POKORSKY grew up in Delaware Township (Cherry Hill) NJ. He was the son
of Adolf F. and Anna Pokorsky. The Pokorskys had come to America from
Poland in 1910. They initially settled in Pennsylvania, where Stanley
Pokorsky was born in 1918. The family moved to New Jersey by 1922, and
by 1930 the family had purchased a home at 2 Adams Avenue in Delaware
Township. Adolf Pokorsky was working for a moving company. Stanley
Pokorsky had been the assistant golf pro at the Merchantville (NJ)
Country Club for five years before his induction into the United States
Army in 1942. His last stateside address was 3 State Street in Delaware
Township.
Stanley Pokorsky was
killed when the landing craft he was in was sunk by attacking German
forces off the coast of Italy on January 26, 1944. Several other local
men were lost. Corporal Pokorsky was survived by his parents, of the
Cherry Hill address, brothers John and Walter Pokorsky, and sisters
Mary, Stella, Helen, Francis, and Elizabeth. He was related through
marriage to the Swiderski family of Cherry Hill.
