Samuel S. French

TECHNICIAN FIFTH CLASS SAMUEL FRENCH was the son of James C. and Sarah French. James and Sarah French had both come to America from Ireland in the early 1910s. The family originally lived in Pennsylvania, moving to Delaware Township NJ in the early 1920s. The family lived at 27 State Street in Delaware Township, which is now known as Cherry Hill. He attended Merchantville High School and Camden County Vocational School in Pennsauken NJ, and had worked at the John R. Evans Company leather factory prior to entering the Army on March 8, 1942.

A member of Company B, 121st Infantry Regiment, Samuel French was killed in action in France on August 11, 1944, at the age of 20. His regiment had been temporarily attached to the 83rd Infantry Division at the time. He was reported as missing in action in the November 3, 1944 edition of the Camden Courier-Post, and was reported as killed in action in the February 4, 1945 edition. 

Samuel French was brought home to New Jersey in the summer of 1949. He was buried locally in August if that year.  He was survived by his parents, sister Elizabeth, and three brothers, William, James, and Albert.
