PRIVATE JOSEPH EDWARD DZURKA appears (according to the 1920 census) to have been born to John and Mary Dzurka in 1916. At the time of the census, John Dzurka and family lived at 1623 Pulaski Street in Camden NJ, John Dzurka then working as a driver at the New York Shipbuilding Company. Joseph E. Dzurka was inducted into the United States Army from Philadelphia PA. He was a member of Company L, 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division. Private Dzurka was killed in action on January 17, 1945, during the Battle of the Bulge. He is buried at Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery in Henri-Chapelle, Belgium, and is honored at the War Memorial in Cherry Hill NJ. He was survived by his wife, Mrs. Stella Dzurka, then of 783 South 2nd Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and his son, Joseph W. Dzurka. She later returned to the home she had grown up in on Highland Avenue in what is now Cherry Hill, New Jersey, where she lived until well into the 2000s. Mrs. Dzurka passed away in 2011. |
