TECHNICAL SERGEANT WILLIAM N. WOLFERT JR. was born on August 20, 1914, in Pennsylvania, to William and Laura Wolfert. He was the oldest of three children. By 1930 the family was living at 208 East Collingswood Avenue, not far from Newton Lake Park, and his father was in the gasoline business. He had attended Collingswood (NJ) High School, as a member of the class of 1935. He entered the Army in 1941, and trained at Fort Dix NJ and Fort Bragg NC. Assigned to the 39th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, he saw action in North Africa and Sicily under General George Patton. William N. Wolfert was killed in action in fighting near St. Lo on July 19, 1944. He was survived by his parents, a younger brother, Corporal George Wolfert, who was serving in the Hawaiian Islands, and a sister Virginia. His last stateside address was 101 Curtis Avenue, Collingswood NJ. After the war, William Wolfert was brought home to New Jersey, and buried at Locustwood Cemetery in what is now Cherry Hill NJ, where he rests next to his mother , Laura Wolfert. |
