Camden Fire Department - 254 Mt. Vernon Street

Continued hot dry weather and more of the bad actions of social misfits gave the Camden Fire Department a too-hot job on July 10, 2012. Late in the morning a call came in reporting heavy fire coming from an abandoned house at 254 Mount Vernon Street. This structure was in the middle of a row of six two-story homes, numbers 248, 250, 252, 254, 256, and 258 Mount Vernon Street, with only 258 being occupied. With heavy fire showing from the second floor, all hands were placed in service. Companies secured water supplies and placed multiple hand lines in operation. With fire extending to the exposures on either side, command ordered all companies out of the dwellings as companies set up for defensive operations, placing their heaviest water lines in service. Crews placed several 2 1/2" hand lines to knock the bulk of the fire down which had extended in the attic area of the dwellings. Crews re- entered the dwellings to hit hot spots and open up. Two firefighters were slightly injured, and through the valiant efforts of Camden's Bravest, the home at 258 Mt. Vernon Street was saved.
