I was in town with a friend, Merchantville volunteer fireman Rob Kanauss, running a few errands and stopping in to say hello here and there. After spending some time at the East Camden firehouse we had gone downtown and were at Fire Headquarters when a call came in concerning a car fire at South 7th and Chestnut Streets. We drove on down, making pretty good time taking the back streets, and got to the 600 block of Chestnut Street to find Squad Company 7 operating. A utility body truck had been traveling northbound on Route 676 when materials in the rear had ignited. The driver got off the highway at Atlantic Avenue, unaware of his problem until pedestrians in the vicinity of South 7th Street and Kaighn Avenue alerted him.

Squad 7 made short work of the fire. We stopped by Liberty Station for a bit, before leaving the city when Ladder 2 went off to the Maintenance Shop. Before we left Camden Fire Department member Craig Spearman drove past, and I got a shot of him driving his car! It was home for me to take my dogs for their daily late afternoon walk… not knowing that I would be back in Camden within a few hours to photograph a dwelling fire at 2819 Benson Street.
