Camden Fire Department - Gas Leak in Cramer Hill

Metal thieves apparently struck again, which pipes being stolen from a vacant two-story twin at 923 North 31st Street in Cramer Hill. A strong odor of natural gas was noticed after someone had been seen leaving the property. Whoever stole the pipes left the gas cock wide open, putting the entire neighborhood in danger from a gas-fired explosion. When I arrived on scene most of the nearby homes had been evacuated, several of Camden's companies were on had as well as a ladder company from Pennsauken. Workers from the gas utility arrived, and as it was determined that gas could not be shot off inside the building, it had to be turned off from the street. A similar crime had happened nearby a few days earlier, only through the grace of God was a disaster avoided.
