This
page and the other pages in this series are the successors to the series
of web-page about the Camden Fire Department called
Camden
Fire Department: The Fires of the Summer of 2011. On this and other
pages in the series you will find pictures and information regarding
different events and aspects of the fire service in Camden, New
Jersey. In
the early evening hours of October 11, a female civilian rang the alarm
at Liberty Station, reporting that a man had been stabbed in a vacant
building at 517 Mechanic
Street, less than 100 yards away. Camden Fire Department and Police
Department personnel found the victim, extricated him from the
boarded-up edifice and turned him over to EMS personnel. He was taken to
Cooper Hospital and was eventually pronounced dead. After 10:00 PM that
evening, the Camden Fire Department was called on to investigate a gas
leak at 818 Division Street, which turned out to be a false alarm. At
the same time, Engine Company 11 was dispatched to the intersection of
North 29th Street and Adams Avenue in Cramer Hill, to investigate a
strange odor. While the odor was present, its source was not apparent.
Rescue Company 1 was dispatched to aid in the investigation. No
combustible or explosive substances were detected in the atmosphere,
ruling out a gas leak. One theory regarding the source of the odor was
that it may have been from a skunk. It was determined that there was no
danger to the general public, and units returned to quarters. Not long
afterwards, units were dispatched to the Northgate I Apartments at 433
North 7th Street to respond to what turned out to be the alarm
malfunctioning, again. A day does not go by without units being sent to
this poorly run and poorly maintained building.
At
3:33 PM on October 12, 2011 units of the Camden Fire Department
responded to a call regarding smoke coming a two-story house at 386
Marlton Avenue. The source of the smoke was a fire at the rear of the
building, caused by someone operating a gas barbecue grill up against an
exterior wall. The fire was quickly extinguished.
Fire
dispatcher Matt DeGailler gave the following account of the incident:
On
October 12, 2011 at 1533 hours Engine 11, Squad 9 (Engine company utilizing spare
Rescue apparatus), Ladder 3, Ladder 1, Ladder 2 (Fast Truck), and Battalion 1
were dispatched to 386 Marlton Avenue for a report of smoke from the rear of
dwelling. Ladder 3 arrived on location with light smoke showing,
and investigated. At 1539 Ladder 3 Command reported an exterior fire with no
extension. All units were recalled with the exception of the first due Engine
(Engine Company 11) and Truck (Ladder Company 3). All units clear 1553 hours.
