Camden Fire Department - 1144 North 24th Street

In the early morning hours of October 5, 2011 the two-story frame house at 1144 North 24th Street in Cramer Hill was destroyed by fire. This building had been subdivided into multiple residences. The fire was first reported at 4:35 AM. Units arrived on scene with heavy fire showing from the second floor. All hands placed in service. Medics were requested for a burn victim out front. Command reported heavy fire throughout, and a second alarm was struck. Numerous master streams were used and the deck gun was also utilized. One male victim was transported to the hospital with burns and smoke inhalation.

Fire dispatcher Matt DeGailler gave the following account of the incident:

Several calls were received reporting a dwelling fire with a possible burn victim. Companies dispatched 0438 hours - Engine 11, Engine 9, Engine 1 (Second Source Company), Ladder 3, Ladder 1, Ladder 2 (FAST Truck), and Battalion 1. Engine 11 arrived and reported a two-story frame, with heavy fire showing on the second floor. An All Hands alarm was transmitted, Squad 7 (Resource Company) and Car 3 (Chief Dipascale) dispatched. At 0445 hours Battalion 1 reported heavy fire on both the first AND second floors, and transmitted 2nd alarm. The second alarm companies - Engine 10, Engine 14-1 (Haddonfield), Ladder 16 (Collingswood), as well as Car 2 (Chief Daniel Rossi), and Car 1 (Chief Michael Harper). The Duty Fire Marshal was also dispatched. At 20 minutes Battalion 1 reported heavy fire conditions, Ladder 3 and Ladder 1 setting up Elevated Master Streams, and that it was doubtful that the fire would be held hold. At 30 minutes Car 2 reported fire had extended into the attic, that two Elevated Master Streams were in operation, and that the fire was then at Probable will hold status. At approximately 0535 hours Chief Michael Harper placed the fire under control. The Red Cross was notified to assist the many occupants of this building who were displaced by the fire. The Camden County Fire Marshal was also notified given notice of the civilian burn victim.

Towering flames rip through house in Camden

CAMDEN, N.J. - October 5, 2011 (WPVI) -- An early morning fire has reduced a Camden, New Jersey home to ashes and sent one man to the hospital with burns and smoke inhalation.

The blaze broke out around 4:30 a.m.

Wednesday in a house on the 1100 block of North 24th Street.

The fire quickly grew into towering flames that poured through the dwelling's windows, doors and roof.

Police say the injured man went back into the burning house to make sure everyone else in his famiily had made it out.

Investigators say it turns out that everyone had already escaped the flames without any injuries.

The 59-year-old man is in serious condition at Cooper University Hospital.

The Red Cross reports that ten adults and one child were displaced by the fire. They say the house was subdivided into four units.

The search for a cause will begin once the embers cool.
