Water, Wires, and Fumes

Another natural disaster came to Camden on Saturday and Sunday, August 27 and 28, 2011 in the form of Hurricane Irene. During the night of the 27th, with the hurricane making landfall in South Jersey, Camden firefighters responded to several calls relating to motorists whose cars became stuck in deep water. After the hurricane passed through the area, the Camden Fire Department received innumerable calls related to flooded basements, downed wires, and suspicious fumes. Princess Avenue — Fumes Call

A call came in concerning fumes in a house in the 1100 block of Princess Avenue. Units including Ladder Company 3, Squad Company 7, and Rescue Company 1 responded, along with EMS personnel.

1543 South 8th Street — Water and Gas

Rescue Company 1 returned from the job on Princess Avenue, stopping first at the vacant industrial site at South 7th and Kaighn Avenue, where an environmental clean-up had been underway prior to the storm. Not twenty minutes had passed before the call came for another job, at 1543 South 8th Street, where it was reported that there was water in the basement and the smell of gas.

Rescue Company 1 arrived on scene, joined momentarily by Engine Company 8, Ladder Company 2, and Battalion Chief Ed Glassman, riding in Car 2. PSE&G Company personnel also arrived on site. After inspecting the house and the home next door at 1545 South 8th Street, it was determined that there was no imminent threat and companies returned to quarters.
