Ferry Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church

Ferry Avenue Methodist Church first appears in Camden City Directories in 1890. A photo, dated 1888, exists and it might indicate that the church was opened in the later part of that year. The church was, and still is, located on the southeast corner of South Eighth Street and Ferry Avenue, with a street address of 768 Ferry Avenue.

The 1890 Directory indicates that this was a “colored” church, i.e., a church consisting of primarily African-American worshippers. What is quite interesting — and the reasons behind this story are unknown to this writer at this time — is the fact that another Methodist church consisting of African-American worshippers first appears in the 1890 Directory only a few hundred feet away, the Bethel African American Episcopal Church at 1841 Philip Street, which also is still in operation.
