PRIVATE WILLIAM C. HETLER was born on March 22, 1922 in Pennsylvania to Clarence and Nellie Hetler. In 1930 the Hetler family lived on Lackawanna Road in Clifton Township, Lackawanna County PA, where Clarence Hetler was employed in a railroad car maintenance shop. The Hetler family moved to the Philadelphia area at some point after the 1930 census was taken. 

A high school graduate, William Hetler was inducted into the United States Army at Philadelphia PA on January 16, 1943. He was sent overseas to the Pacific Theater, with a radar unit, the 596th Signal Air Warning Battalion, and saw duty on New Britain and Biak. Private Hetler died from causes not related to combat during World War II on July 4, 1944.

William Hetler was brought home to New Jersey in 1948 aboard the USAT George W.G. Boyce. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. William Hetler was survived by his father, Clarence Hetler, of 819 Greenwood Avenue, Gloucester City NJ.
