PRIVATE WALTER H. PITTMAN was born in New Jersey in 1923 to Walter and Ella Pittman. In 1930 the Pittman family lived at 111 North 25th Street in Camden NJ. His mother was the daughter of Sergeant Harry Newton, a well-known Camden police officer. His father was the chief clerk in the office of the superintendent of the Pennsylvania-Reading-Seashore railroad. A sister, Delores, was born about 1932. The family later moved to Merchantville NJ, and Walter Pittman graduated from Merchantville High School in 1942. Walter Pittman enlisted in the United States Army on the day before his high school graduation. Initially assigned to the Signal Corps, Walter Pittman qualified for the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP), and was sent to Los Angeles CA to study chemical engineering. It was here that he took ill in June of 1943, and died, after a two week stay at an Army hospital, on June 29, 1943. He was survived by his parents and sister, all of 759 Cleveland Avenue, Elizabeth NJ, where they had recently moved, as the elder Pittman had been named as the Chief Clerk of the New York Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad. A funeral was held for him at the Joseph H. Murray Funeral Home at 408 Cooper Street in Camden NJ, on June 7, 1943. His death was reported in the June 7, 1943 edition of the Camden Courier-Post. Walter Pittman was brought home to New Jersey. He was buried at Arlington Cemetery in Pennsauken NJ, where today he rests next to his mother. |
