PRIVATE FIRST CLASS THOMAS J. STANDEN was born in 1924 in New Jersey to Charles N. and Adele Standen. In 1930 the family owned a home on Lafayette Avenue in the Colonial Manor section of West Deptford Township NJ. Charles Standen, a veteran of World War I, was then employed as an auto repairman for a cigar company, according to census records. Thomas Standen was the second child, coming after sister Charlotte, and before brothers Charles and Richard. After attending classes at Paulsboro (NJ) High School, he took a job in the crystal department at the RCA-Victor plant in Camden NJ.

Inducted into the United States Army at 20 years old when he was reported as killed in action in Italy on October 18, 1944. The Camden Courier-Post reported his address as 1412 Lafayette Street in Colonial Manor, Woodbury, NJ. The Army, however, lists him as having come from Camden County NJ. He was working at the RCA plant in Camden prior to entering the Army.
