SEAMAN FIRST CLASS
NICHOLAS FONDACARO, of Waterford Road in Blue Anchor NJ, enlisted in the
United States Navy in July of 1943, after having worked at the New York
Shipbuilding Corporation shipyard in Camden NJ. The son of Mr. and Mrs.
Anthony Fondacaro, he was serving aboard the destroyer escort USS
Underhill DE-682 with Radarman
Second Class Michael D. Capparelli of Camden NJ when the Underhill
was torpedoed and sunk of of the Philippine Islands on July 24, 1945.
His death was reported in the August 24, 1945 morning edition of the
Camden Courier-Post.
Nicholas Fondacaro
was survived by his parents, a brother, Corporal Francis Fondacaro, who
had entered the Army in July of 1942, and an uncle, Joseph Delano, of
1917 Kossuth Street, Camden NJ, who was serving with the Army in North
Africa in December of 1944.
