CHIEF
ENGINEER RAYMOND FARR was born in 1896 in Illinois. He married his wife
Anna in 1915, and went to sea for the first time shortly thereafter. He
served in World War I, and saw "plenty of action". The
Farr family moved to New Jersey around 1918, settling at 348 Reading
Avenue in Barrington NJ, where they lived until about 1941, when they
move to Westville. He served on ships between the wars, with periods
where he took employment locally, including stints as chief engineer at
the Philadelphia Academy of Music, and at Campbell's Soup in Camden NJ.
Raymond
Farr returned to the sea late in 1942. He was lost on May 16,
1943. when his ship, the SS WILLIAM K. VANDERBILT, was torpedoed and
sunk in the Pacific. Of the 57 crew members aboard, he was the only man
lost.
