CAPTAIN FRANK W. FITZGERALD was born in Pennsylvania in 1905 to Francis W. and Helen A. "Nellie" Fitzgerald, the seventh of eight children. His father owned a soap factory. The Fitzgerald family had moved to New Jersey by 1909, and by 1920 bought a home at 653 Haddon Avenue in Collingswood NJ. He graduated from the Penn Nautical school in 1925, and trained aboard the US Schoolship Annapolis. A career merchant marine officer, he commanded a ship during the American invasion of Sicily. Frank
Fitzgerald passed away on September 28, 1944 at the Army Hospital in
Bangor ME. He was 38 at the time of his death, which was reported in the
September 29, 1944 edition of the Camden Courier-Post.

Capt. Frank Fitzgerald Jr., 38, formerly of 653 Haddon Avenue,
Collingswood {NJ], died Wednesday [9/28/44] in an army Hospital in
Bangor, Me. A Merchant marine officer, he commanded a ship in the Sicily
invasion. he resided in Collingswood most of his life. |
