LEWIS E. ADAMS was born on March 20, 1919 to William E. and Ethel J. Adams.

After the Japanese attacked Peal Harbor on December 7, 1941, Lewis Adams enlisted in the United States Army while in Pennsylvania. Private Adams was assigned to Company I of the 369th Infantry Regiment, 92nd Infantry Division. With his unit he was sent to train at Fort Huachuca AZ. It was there that Private Adams was taken ill. After reporting to the station hospital at Fort Huachuca, he was diagnosed as having severe acute meningitis. On January 9, 1943 Lewis Adams, who had volunteered to serve his country, died from pneumonia contracted as a complication of meningitis.

Private Adams' remains were sent home for burial. Arrangements were handled by Franklin T. Walker, who served the African-American community of Camden county from his premises at 743 Chestnut for many years. Private Adams was buried at the Sunset Memorial Park in the Delair section of Pennsauken NJ, not far from the home of his mother and father.
