PRIVATE JOSEPH L. WINTER was the son of Ludwig and Josephine Winter. He was born in New Jersey around 1914. In 1920 the family, which included a younger sister, Catherine, lived at 35 Minck Avenue in Berlin Township NJ. Ludwig Winter supported the family as a watchman in a storage house. Joseph Winter had completed high school and was working as a mechanic or machinist prior to being drafted.

Joseph Winter was inducted into the Army on June 12, 1942 at Fort Dix NJ. He trained with the 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th infantry Division. 

The 8th Infantry Regiment of the 4th Division was one of the first Allied units to hit the beaches at Normandy on D-day, June 6, 1944.

Private Winter was killed in action on July 24, 1944 during an attack north of the Periers-St. Lo Highway in Normandy, France.
