SERGEANT GRANT S. CATE was
one of three sons of Mr. and Mrs. Fred A. Cate of 6221 Upsal Street in Pennsauken
NJ to serve in the Army during WWII. Born around 1920, he was a graduate
of Merchantville (NJ) High School. When he was drafted he was
living at 2303 Cove Road in Pennsauken NJ and working as a punch press
operator.
Grant Cate received his
orders and reported for duty on July 7, 1942 and was sent initially to
Fort Dix. In August of 1943 the Camden Courier-Post published the picture of the Cate
brothers below, with news
of their Army activities. At that time, Grant Cate, then a corporal, was
serving at Shreveport LA. The Courier-Post gave the family address at
that time as 2303 Cove Road, Pennsauken NJ.
He was 24 when he died during amphibious maneuvers off the coast
of Italy. He was survived by his parents, and brothers Deane and Kenneth
Cate.
