PRIVATE EDWARD J. McGOVERN JR. had gone overseas as a member of the 87th Chemical  Battalion and had landed in France on D-Day, June 6, 1944. On November 10, 1944 (D-Day plus 157) Company D completed move to new positions southeast of Gressenich and prepared for coming operations. The column came under shellfire, estimated to be 170mm while passing through Vicht. Five men were wounded, three seriously and evacuated, two vehicles were damaged and evacuated. Private McGovern died as a result of these wounds on November 15, 1944. 

Edward J. McGovern, Jr. had ties to Camden County and Pleasantville NJ, and the Camden Courier-Post newspaper reported his address as 434 West Delilah Road. He  is buried at the Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery in Henri-Chapelle, Belgium.
