SEAMAN SECOND CLASS ANDREW PANAOYOTIS MATIS was born on October 22, 1927. He was from a large Greek family that lived in Camden NJ. The 1930 Census shws the family at 755 Florence Street in Camden. He joined the United States Navy during World War II. 

On June 21, 1946 Seaman Matis joined the crew of USS Antietam CV-36, having been previously stationed at NAB Grote on the island of Guam in the southwest Pacific. He died on July 19, 1946, of causes not related to combat. His body was interred on February 24, 1949 at the National Momorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Andrew P. Matis was survived by his mother, Mrs. Gertrude Matis, of 903 Haddon Avenue in Camden.
