SIGNALMAN THIRD CLASS ENLOW D. OAKES had lived in Camden NJ before the war, at 728 Washington Street. He worked as a fireman for the Pennsylvania Railroad, before enlisting in the United States Navy on March 11, 1942. Friends in Camden last heard from him in the summer of 1943, where he was serving with amphibious forces. Enlow Oakes was reported missing in action on September 15, 1943. On that day, two Land Craft, Tank ships, the LCT(5)-19 and the LCT(5)-41 were sunk off Salerno, Italy. It is likely that Enlow Oakes was serving on one or the other of these craft. His loss was reported in the November 39, 1943 edition of the Camden Courier-Post. He was declared dead on September 16, 1944. Enlow Oakes was survived by his mother, Mrs. Anna J. Oakes, of Durant MA. |
