PRIVATE FIRST CLASS
CHARLES J. FUHRMAN was the son of Edward and Hannah Fuhrman. He was born
in Camden NJ and attended Camden
High
School, not far from
his home in the Parkside section of Camden.
He was graduated as a member of the
Camden
High School Class of 1942. The Fuhrman's had
lived at 1247 Kenwood
Avenue when the census was taken in 1930 before moving
to 1134 Langham
Avenue, where they lived in the mid 1940s. His family was in the retail
furniture
business, and owned and operated the N.
Fuhrman Co. furniture store at 933-937
Broadway in Camden for many
years. As a youth, Charles Fuhrman was active in youth civic affairs.
Inducted into the Army at the age of
18, in the fall of 1943, Charles Fuhrman trained at Camp Shelby MS. He
was wounded on D-Day, and returned to duty after he recovered from his
injury. He was killed in action while serving in Belgium on January 15,
1945.
Private Charles J. Fuhrman
was initially buried in Europe. His body was returned to the United
States and he was buried at Crescent Burial Park in Pennsauken NJ.
Besides his parents, he was survived by two brothers, Corporal Leonard
Fuhrman who was also serving in Europe, and Joseph Fuhrman; an uncle, Abe Fuhrman, then
clerk to Camden Mayor Bruner; a cousin,
Clarence
Fuhrman, musical
director of radio station KYW, in Philadelphia; and several other aunts,
uncles, and cousins. His parents had by this time moved to 1417
Baird
Avenue in Camden.
