JOHN ALBERT OVERLAND,
Drummer USMC, was born in 1899. He was the son of Albert
G. and Hannah Overland. The family lived at 411
Royden street when the
census was taken in 1900. Albert Overland had emigrated from Norway, worked as a
ships carpenter. Sadly, Hannah Overland passed away on December 7, 1902
and was buried at Evergreen Cemetery on
mt. ephraim avenue in
camden.
John Albert Overland enlisted
in the United States Marine Corps on July 21,
1914 at Philadelphia and was sent to the Marine Barracks at Washington,
DC. He trained there as a drummer. On March 19, 1915 he qualified as a
drummer and was transferred to the Marine Barracks at the Naval Academy
at Annapolis, Maryland. He served at various locations including
Quantico, Virginia and the Philadelphia Navy Yard. When the Marines went
into Haiti in 1915, John Overland went with them. He stayed into
December of 1915. By the end of February he had been reposted stateside.
In March and April of 1917 he was assigned to the Marine Aviation
section at Pensacola, Florida. In May he was transferred to the 15th
Company, Fifth Marines. John Albert Overland went overseas in June of
1917. John Overland was killed in action on June 15, 1918 during the fighting at Belleau
Wood.
John Albert Overland was
survived by his father, a brother, Albert Overland, and his
grandmother, Janette Overland, all of 517
Borton
Street, Camden NJ.
